Advancing Knowledge and Shaping Policy in Mobility and Motor Sport

The FIA University White Paper Series is a new initiative delivering academically rigorous, data-driven insights into the critical challenges and innovations shaping the future of mobility and motor sport. The series supports the FIA’s strategic mission to lead through evidence-based research, guiding policy, informing practice, and addressing the evolving needs of FIA Member Clubs, policymakers, and industry stakeholders worldwide.

Academic Excellence with Global Impact

Aligned with the FIA’s strategic priorities, the White Papers are authored by internationally recognised academics from leading institutions including UC Berkeley, Imperial College London, VTI Sweden, and the University of Toronto. Their research spans key topics such as:

  • Road safety and crash prevention
  • Digital and intelligent infrastructure
  • Sustainable transport systems
  • Inclusive mobility access
  • Motorsport safety and innovation

First White Paper: Transforming Transport: Evolution of Mobility Technologies and Services

The inaugural paper, Transforming Transport: Evolution of Mobility Technologies and Services, authored by Professor Susan Shaheen and researcher Adam Cohen (UC Berkeley), examines five intersecting transport trends:

  • Electrification: Implications for policy, infrastructure and energy systems.
  • Automation: Levels of autonomy and regulatory readiness.
  • Shared Mobility: Environmental and behavioural impact assessments.
  • Digital Platforms: Global case studies on Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS).
  • Governance and Access: Equity-driven design and policy frameworks.

This publication offers critical insights into how emerging technologies and new mobility services interact – not just with one another, but with the people and communities they are intended to serve.
